Amy Powell – Unlimited Intern

In August 2014 Amy Powell undertook an 8 week internship at Shape to work on Unlimited. She settled in straight away and proved an invaluable member of the team, assisting with administrative tasks and hands on delivery at the Southbank Centre’s Unlimited Festival. An artist is her own right, Amy provided a creative eye and unique incite into Unlimited Commissioned work and the overall festival programe. We collated her thoughts and feedback from the Unlimited experience below:

‘Unlimited shook my beliefs about disability and what can be achieved by people with vastly differing physical, mental and learning abilities. To see artists be so open and honest about their experiences and their journey in how they see themselves and how others have seen them was very powerful. To not feel the need to explain or apologise for who you are. To take your creative drive and make work that is challenging, hilarious, poignant and insightful is incredibly valuable. This work needs a platform to make it visible, to support people who are under the heavy ideological fire, that they are wasting government money. We are not fighting for the right to have limitations but the right to be heard and involved to have the support needed to live independently and with dignity. To me that is what Unlimited is about. Having a voice and playfully questioning beliefs and ideas about disability and different ways of being in the world.’
