What a difference a year makes

Unlimited Trainee Simon reflects on a year with Unlimited and how YOU could be the next Unlimited Trainee Producer.

As Christmas adverts start competing for my attention while I walk through the train station every morning, it’s hard for me to believe that it was about this time last year that I stumbled across a job advert for a year-long traineeship based at Artsadmin, working on the Unlimited programme.

It had been a rather strange post-graduation year for me, and the question that was popping up most of all at the holiday parties I was attending was the dreaded ‘what are you going to do next?’. I applied and when I was eventually offered the traineeship in mid-December it was a fantastic early Christmas present.

So, a year on, the Unlimited team are now looking for their next trainee and I’m reflecting on what my traineeship has meant to me. Overall, it has been a great opportunity to meet lots of people within the creative sector and see new work, it’s taught me new digital skills, and it’s increased my knowledge and opened my mind to new perspectives. I’ve been thrown into new environments with enough challenges to make me feel empowered but also enough support to feel like it’s a safe space to learn. It’s given me (at least some) answers to questions I had about my own career and, even if the answers that arrived weren’t always what I expected or predicted, it’s definitely made me more decisive.

With applications open now for the next trainee, I’m taking this blog as a chance to encourage any other disabled creatives looking for a first step onto the professional ladder, or maybe a new direction for the new year, to find some time during this busy time of year to put the kettle on, sit down and apply! Give yourself a chance to have a brilliant Christmas present you can enjoy all through 2017… and maybe beyond?

Apart from anything else it’s so much more exciting than socks! Applications close on Monday the 5 of December 2016.

You can find out more about the experiences of our two previous trainees, Rosie and Ollie, below, and you can apply for the traineeship here.
